Wilson, Ira B., composer; b. Bedford, Iowa, Sept. 6, 1880; d. Los Angeles, Calif., Apr. 3, 1950. ASCAP 1938. Theory, harmony, piano, violin in­struction from older sister; with various teachers later. Became con­nected with publishing company 1905; composer, editor, and ar­ranger. Works: chiefly for church choir and public school use. In public school field best known work series cantatas based on American legends: The Childhood of Hiawatha, Rip Van Winkle; The Courtship of Miles Standish; The Legend of Sleepy Hol­low; George Washington; The Spirit of '76; also Romance of Cinderella (based on Mozart) and The Frost-King's Daughter (based on Grieg). Operettas for public school use: Chonita, based on music of Liszt; The Forest Prince (Tchaikovsky); Enchanted Isle (Chopin); and origi­nal operettas: The Governors Daugh­ter; H. R. H. Educ: Guatemala public schools; San Fran­cisco High School, Polytechnic; in music with Julio Minetti; and Sig-mund Beal. Played violin in various orchestras; concertmaster Minetti's Orch. Works: comic opera King Zim of Zniba; Three Indian Love Songs.

Jacobson; harmony and composition with Frederick Grant Gleason; organ with William Middleschulte. Director, theoretical department at Univ. of Nebraska School of Music, 1902-09. To Europe 1909; two years composing; studied with Max Reger 1910. Con­ducted Atlanta Philh. 1911; director Atlanta Cons. 1916. To New York taught harmony and composition at Malkin School and privately. Com­posed music for motion pictuies: The Covered Wagon; Thief of Bag­dad; Don Q., Black Pirate. Works: suite, From My Youth; overture New Orleans ($500 prize from Rialto and Rivoli theaters); overture 1849; scenic fantasy, My Country; Trio in G Minor, Op. 15; two Violin Sonatas; also symphonies, overtures, chamber music, works for organ, songs, and piano pieces. Editor of: The Organist, 1940-50, The Choir Herald since 1946; The Volunteer Choir since 1950; contributing editor of The Choir Leader; The Organ Portfolio and The Quarterly Anthem Folio. Works: choir cantatas, two school operettas, anthems, choral music (secular and sacred), church organ compositions, and sacred solos.
